Wilt: A Brief History & Thanks

Wilt (an acronym for ‘What I’m Listening To’) was a small project I started just over seven months ago. Originally intended as a means to share new music that I had discovered to several of my friends who like me, were sick of the over produced formulaic music that is produced by the mainstream music industry.

Unlike my friends, I spend a fair bit of time browsing music blogs through the music blog aggregator elbo.ws and researching songs that I hear through TV Shows such as ‘Chuck’ that consistently feature quality music from independent or lesser known artists. From the beginning all I was aiming to achieve through Wilt was to expose, and be a proxy to the independent music scene for my friends.

A few recurring themes have surfaced through this project. The first would be the structure, although I discover more than 15 songs a month, I wanted to take a quality of quantity approach. So I like to view Wilt as the best of the music I have discovered that month. The second would be the key importance of the 10th song. Over the past several releases of Wilt, I have started placing alternate versions of songs in the 10th place. So far I have used two different sources to accomplish this, either through the very talented group at RAC or through the amazing live recording team at Daytrotter. The third would be the album artwork, each piece is a photograph taken from my Sony Ericsson k800i. So in a sense Wilt could be described as a monthly time capsule of my life, the music I was listening to and a photo I took from that month.

The reason I decided to write this brief history is for one simple reason: For the first time since the projects birth in April, Wilt: October 2010 surpassed Wilt: April 2010 as the most downloaded Wilt.

Because of that I would like to thank a few people. Firstly, my good friend Simon who constantly supports me with whatever I do (and has an amazing taste in music). He has made several seasonal compilations of terrific music which can be all downloaded from here. I would highly recommend it. Secondly, I would like to thank another one of my good friends Denise who downloads and listens to Wilt each month, I can’t thank you enough. Thirdly, I would like to thank you the listeners, the people who download Wilt and listen to it. You guys are amazing. Seriously. Last but not least, I would like to thank the brilliant artists that produce an amazing body of work, what you guys do is why I make these mixes. Your music is something to be celebrated.

I hope you guys love these compilations as much as I love compiling them, month after month. Please support the artists where you can, whether that’s going to see them live, buying their albums or simply just promoting their music. These guys work hard, we love them for it and they deserve to see that.

All previous Wilt’s can be located here or directly here through a Mediafire folder.
